# Best Movie Magic Scheduling Alternatives for Film Production

Movie Magic Scheduling earned its place. MMS 10 handles two, three, or four units shooting the same day on sub-boards, manages block shoots and cross-boards for episodic seasons, flags conflicts with fittings and rehearsals, shows the Day Out of Days on screen, and exports the one-liner to Excel. It imports Final Draft .fdx scripts and .sex files with tagged elements, and it sends elements to Movie Magic Budgeting. On a studio series, those are the features that keep a 1st AD sane.

The complaints tend to be about everything around that. MMS is an installed program for macOS and Windows, with support limited to recent OS versions (macOS 11 through 15, Windows 10 and 11 at 21H2 or later). The cloud piece EP describes is EP Cloud Backup, which saves a copy of each version; EP doesn't describe two people editing one board at the same time. The price is also a subscription now: $39.99 a month or $279.88 a year at list, with an introductory $29.99 a month or $199.88 a year when we checked. That is reasonable for a working AD and a lot for a film student scheduling a ten-page short.

If you are on a union show where the office trades MMS files, keep MMS. If you are scheduling indie features, shorts, commercials, or student films, one of these may fit better. ## 1. Storiara

Storiara is for the producer or AD on a smaller show who would rather not spend the first two days of prep tagging a script. Upload a PDF, Word, or Final Draft file and it splits scenes from the INT/EXT headings, measures each scene in eighths from the PDF page layout, and uses AI to list characters, locations, props, wardrobe, and music and effects. You can highlight any word in the script panel and add it as a prop, vehicle, stunt, extra, or other element, then print breakdown sheets.

Scheduling happens on a drag-and-drop stripboard in the browser, so a producer and an AD can both open it. You set shoot dates and daily start and end times; the board won't accept a scene that runs a day past your maximum length. The cast [Day Out of Days](https://storiara.com/glossary/day-out-of-days) fills itself from the board with SW, W, WF, SWF, H, and I codes, and you can switch any cell by hand. Call sheets, emailed or shared by link, and a budget top sheet with Excel export sit in the same project.

Where it falls short of MMS is significant for a working AD. There are no sub-boards or multi-unit days, no automatic sorting or grouping by location, no turnaround or day/night rules, and no Movie Magic import or export. The schedule and DOOD print but don't export to CSV or Excel. The DOOD covers cast only. If your office expects a Movie Magic file, Storiara can't produce one.

Pricing: new accounts start on the free Beginner plan with a 30-day trial of unlimited stories, after which a paid plan is needed to keep working. Producer is $39.99 a month for one member plus $19.99 a month per extra collaborator. Studio is custom. That makes one scheduler on Producer $479.88 a year, versus $279.88 for MMS at list.

## 2. Gorilla Scheduling

Gorilla is the closest thing to MMS in how it thinks: breakdown sheets, stripboards with a third row, element linking, scene timing, and a report list that includes the shooting schedule, one-line schedule, Day Out of Days, SAG Exhibit G, and a stripboard report. It imports Final Draft .fdx, Movie Magic Screenwriter .sex, and PDF screenplays, and it can export to Movie Magic Scheduling's .sex format, which helps when you have to send a board back to an MMS office.

The difference is choice of platform. Gorilla Desktop runs locally on Mac and Windows, like MMS. Gorilla Scheduling Online runs in a browser with collaborators on paid plans, a dual stripboard, comments between users, and a DOOD summary. Projects can move between the two versions.

Weak spots: the online free tier stops at 20 editable scenes, desktop has no collaboration, and call sheets on desktop need the separate Koala add-on. Storyboards and shot lists are listed for desktop only.

## 3. StudioBinder

StudioBinder is a browser suite that covers writing, breakdowns, a stripboard with auto sorting by location and time of day, shot lists, storyboards, and call sheets sent by email and text with delivery tracking. It is popular with commercial, branded, and corporate producers who want the shot list and call sheet in the same project as the schedule.

Against MMS it trades scheduling depth for breadth. It won't hand a union office an MMS file, and several features are tier-gated: text-message call sheets and call sheet tracking start on Indie, while branded call sheets and multiple stripboard schedules come with Professional.

Pricing: a free plan with 1 project; Starter $29 a month (10 projects), Indie $49 a month (25 projects), Professional $99 a month (unlimited projects), each a little lower billed yearly. ## 4. Filmustage

Filmustage is web software that uses AI for the breakdown, scene synopsis, budget draft, VFX breakdown, and schedule suggestions through its assistant, AI Dude. It has a stripboard, a drag-and-drop calendar, conflict detection, and DOOD reports. What makes it relevant here is export: PDF, Excel, and Movie Magic Scheduling and Budgeting formats. You can do a fast AI pass in Filmustage and send the result to someone working in MMS.

The drawbacks are the coin system and what happens when you stop paying. Director's Cut includes 1,700 coins per billing cycle, and projects built with a full AI breakdown pause if the subscription lapses, while manual projects stay open on the free plan.

## 5. Yamdu

Yamdu fits a production company replacing MMS across a slate of projects. It imports Movie Magic and Fuzzlecheck schedules, imports and exports Final Draft, and wraps scheduling in a production office: day out of days reports, call sheet builder, budgeting with Showbiz import and export, crew management, time cards, and CSV and Excel exports. It has iOS and Android apps.

It is heavy for one scheduler on one film. Flex is $45 a month for 1 user and 1 project, with extra users at $22 a month and extra projects at $45. ## 6. Celtx

Celtx is a writing platform with production planning attached: breakdown, catalog, shot list, schedule, script sides, and budget. For a writer-director making a short, doing the breakdown in the same account as the script saves a round of exports.

On a feature with a full AD department it won't replace MMS. The production planning tools are not in Free, Writer, or Writer Pro; they come with the Team plan from $44.99 a month billed yearly for up to 3 members, or as add-ons. ## 7. SetHero

SetHero has no scheduling tools at all. It is built for ADs and coordinators who keep boarding in MMS and want the call sheet out of Excel. SetHero offers an MMS-to-Excel exporter, a drag-and-drop call sheet builder, and distribution by email and text with receipt, open, and confirmation tracking.

Pricing is by projects per year. Starter begins at $19 a month (up to 35 people and 4 shooting days per project), Pro at $49 a month (65 people, 8 days, up to 5 admins), and Studio at $129 a month (125 people, 12 days). ## Choosing based on how you schedule

Ask two questions before anything else. Does anyone downstream need a Movie Magic file? And how many people need to edit the board at the same time?

If the answer to the first is yes, stay on MMS or pick a tool that writes MMS formats. Gorilla and Filmustage both do. If you need a shared board and nobody needs MMS files, Storiara, StudioBinder, and Gorilla Online are all browser-based.

Then test with a real script. Import the same 95-page draft into two tools and compare the scene count and page totals against your own count; a miscounted 2 4/8-page scene becomes a miscounted day.
