> Greenery, or greens, is the breakdown category and art department unit covering plants seen on camera, including potted plants, trees, hedges, grass, flowers, vines, and fake or dead foliage. The greens crew brings, places, hides things behind, and maintains plants so a location reads as the right season, region, and story moment.

## Why greenery earns its own category

The traditional breakdown color scheme doesn't have a fixed color for greenery. Scheduling programs still list it as its own category, separate from [set dressing](https://storiara.com/glossary/set-dressing), because plants behave differently from furniture. They're heavy, they die, they need water and sometimes permits to bring onto public property, and they're tied to seasons the story depends on.

## Common greenery needs

- Seasonal changes: adding fall color, removing leaves, fake snow on shrubs (sometimes SFX)
- Regional cheats: palms or cactus to turn one state into another
- Hiding: potted hedges in front of air-conditioning units, modern cars, or signs

- Story plants: a garden that dies across the film, a wedding's flowers, a houseplant a character waters

## Scheduling and continuity

Greens work is labor-heavy and often happens before the shooting crew arrives, so a heavily dressed exterior may need a pre-rig day. Real plants wilt under lights and in heat, and a location shot over several days needs watering and replacement to stay consistent. ## Mistakes

The usual one is not tagging greenery at all, then finding on the tech scout that the "desert road" has green hills behind it. Another is forgetting to budget restoration.
