> IATSE, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, is the North American labor union that represents most below-the-line crafts in film, television, and live entertainment. Its members work in locals organized by craft or region, such as Local 600 for camera, Local 80 for grips, and Local 700 for editors. Productions sign IATSE agreements to hire union crew.

## How the locals work

IATSE is organized as an international union with hundreds of locals. Some are craft locals with national or regional reach, and some are geographic "mixed" locals that cover several crafts in one city or state. For film crews, the ones people mention most are:

Many cities outside Los Angeles and New York have a single local covering most crafts, so a grip and a set dresser in the same state may belong to the same local.

## What changes on an IATSE show

The contract sets minimum rates by classification, overtime after a set number of hours, [meal periods](https://storiara.com/glossary/lunch-break) and penalties, rest periods between days, and pension and health contributions. ## Mistakes to avoid

Treating the union as one rulebook. The Basic Agreement, the Area Standards Agreement, and each local's specific terms all matter. A 1st AD who learned turnaround rules on an LA series may be wrong about a show in New Mexico.

## Frequently asked questions

### What's the difference between the IATSE Basic Agreement and the Area Standards Agreement?

The Basic Agreement covers the Hollywood-based West Coast locals. The Area Standards Agreement covers productions working in many other regions of the US. Both are negotiated with the AMPTP, and rules and rates differ between them.

### How do you join IATSE?

Each local sets its own requirements. In Los Angeles, many crafts require placement on the Contract Services Industry Experience Roster, which is based on documented days of work and required safety courses.

### Can a non-union crew member work on an IATSE show?

Sometimes, depending on the local and the agreement. On some agreements a new hire who isn't a member can be brought on and then has to join within a set period. Ask the local before making an offer.
