> A pitch deck is a short slide presentation, usually 10 to 20 slides, that sells a film project to investors, financiers, sales agents, or talent. It covers the story, the creative team and attachments, the budget and finance plan, comparable films, and how and when investors get paid. It is a business document, where a lookbook is a visual one.

## Slides a financier expects

Every deck is different, but investors and sales agents look for the same information. A deck for THE LONG DRIVE runs 14 slides:

| Slide | Content | What the reader checks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Title, logline, key art | Is the hook clear in one line |
| 2 | Synopsis (one paragraph) | Genre and tone match the budget |
| 3 | Why now, audience | Who pays to see it |
| 4 to 5 | Director statement and lookbook images | Visual confidence |
| 6 | Cast attachments or wish list | Attached (signed) versus wish list |
| 7 | Producers and department heads | Track record |
| 8 | Comparable films | Budgets and outcomes similar to this one |
| 9 | Budget top sheet summary | $2,000,000 all in, contingency included |
| 10 | Finance plan | What is committed and what is still open |
| 11 | Incentives | The state credit and how it's monetized |
| 12 | Sales and distribution plan | Sales agent, festivals, target buyers |
| 13 | Investor terms | Recoupment, premium, profit split |
| 14 | Timeline and contact | Prep, shoot, delivery dates |

## Making slide 10 hold up

The finance plan slide is where decks lose credibility. It should add to the budget and label every source as committed, in negotiation, or targeted:

- Equity $700,000 (of which $250,000 committed)
- Pre-sale loan $450,000 (sales agent estimates, no contracts yet)
- Tax credit loan $350,000 (targeted, lender term sheet pending)
- Gap loan $300,000 (targeted)
- Deferments $200,000 (committed in deal memos)

Total: $700,000 + $450,000 + $350,000 + $300,000 + $200,000 = $2,000,000, with $450,000 actually committed. An investor would rather see that honest $450,000 than a slide claiming the whole budget is "in place". Run the incentive line through the [incentive calculator](https://storiara.com/tools/incentive-calculator) and cite the program by name.

## Common mistakes

Comparables are misused more than any other slide. Listing a breakout hit that cost ten times your budget tells a financier you don't know the market. Use films with similar budgets, genres, and cast levels, and show the failures along with the successes.

Decks also blur cast attachments. A name listed without a signed letter of intent reads as attached, and sales agents will check with the actor's agent. Mark wish lists clearly.

The investor terms slide needs to match the operating agreement exactly. If the deck says 125 percent recoupment and the documents say 120, you have a problem with every investor who kept the deck.

## What goes with the deck

A deck opens a conversation. Serious financiers follow up asking for the script, a [budget top sheet](https://storiara.com/templates/budget-top-sheet), the full [business plan](https://storiara.com/blog/how-to-write-a-film-business-plan), a [P&L projection](https://storiara.com/blog/the-p-l-projection-predicting-the-success-of-your-film), and the [waterfall](https://storiara.com/glossary/waterfall). ## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between a pitch deck and a lookbook?

A lookbook shows how the film will look and feel through images, color, and references. A pitch deck includes some of that but focuses on the business case: budget, financing, comparables, audience, and returns.

### How long should a film pitch deck be?

Short enough to read in ten minutes. Most producers aim for 10 to 20 slides and put detailed numbers in a separate business plan or P&L that goes out after a first meeting.

### Should a pitch deck include financial projections?

Include the budget, the finance plan, and a clear summary of investor terms. Revenue projections are more sensitive: in the US, material given to prospective investors can fall under securities rules, so have an attorney review anything that forecasts returns.
