Reading an EDL line
A CMX 3600 EDL looks like this when you open it in a text editor:

Event 001 takes 3 seconds and 12 frames of A camera, clip 3 on card 42, starting at source timecode 14:22:10:05, and places it at the start of reel 3 on the record side. The C means a straight cut. Event 003 has a D and 012, a 12-frame dissolve into the next clip. The source and record durations match in every event unless a speed change is involved, which is one of the first things an assistant editor checks.
How it gets used in finishing
Editors cut with lightweight proxy files. At picture lock, the assistant exports an EDL (often one per reel, since shorter lists are easier to troubleshoot) and hands it to the online editor or colorist. The colorist loads the EDL against the original camera files and the conform rebuilds the cut at full resolution. Because the EDL matches on reel name and timecode, those two pieces of metadata have to survive from camera card to edit to finish without being changed.
VFX vendors get EDLs too, with handles added. A VFX pull might request eight frames of handle on either side of each shot, so the vendor has room if the editor extends a cut by a few frames.
What breaks EDLs
Most failures come from metadata. If the DIT or a transcode renames clips, the reel names in the EDL won't match the camera originals. If two cameras recorded with the same timecode and card numbers, the conform can pull the wrong clip. Speed ramps, nested sequences, and multiple video tracks don't translate well into CMX 3600, so editors flatten or flag them before export.
The fix starts on set: unique card and reel names per camera per day, consistent timecode, and a camera report that matches the files. A mismatched EDL usually surfaces as a flash frame or a wrong shot flagged in the QC report, which is far more expensive to trace than a clean naming convention at dailies.
