How to retry scene extraction

When Storiara fails to pull scenes from your script, restart the extraction from the Scenes page with Retry Extraction, or add scenes by hand.

After a script upload, Storiara splits it into scenes and then pulls locations, cast, props, wardrobe, and effects. Occasionally that pull fails partway, for example when the AI service times out. Storiara's servers check for unfinished pulls every minute and retry the ones marked retryable, so many failures fix themselves. You can also restart it yourself.

How a failed pull looks

Open Scenes. Instead of a scene list, the empty panel shows Scene extraction failed followed by the reason. When the failure is retryable, a second line reads "This will be retried automatically, or you can retry now." Below it is the Retry Extraction button.

Steps

  1. On My Stories, click the story card so it shows Selected.
  2. Open Scenes from the sidebar.
  3. Read the error text under the warning icon. It tells you whether the problem is in the file or in processing.
  4. Click Retry Extraction.
  5. Look for Retrying Scene Extraction, which says the script is being re-processed and may take a minute.
  6. Watch the progress banner. Scenes stream into the list as they're found, then the other steps run.

When the button isn't there

Retry Extraction only shows when no scenes came through at all. If scenes loaded but a later step reported a problem (you'll see a "Production plan pulled" message noting issues), the scenes are fine and you can add missing locations or props by hand, or upload the script again as a new version.

If the list says No scenes available, the pull finished but found no scene headings. Retrying won't help. Either fix the headings so they start with INT. or EXT. and upload a new version, or click Add Scene and build the list yourself.

If it doesn't work

  • "Retry Failed" means the request itself didn't go through. Check your connection and click the button again.
  • If the same error comes back after two or three tries, the file is the likely cause. Export a fresh PDF or .fdx and use upload a new script version.
  • Scanned PDFs fail at the text step every time. Export from the writing app instead.

The Scenes guide covers reordering and editing scenes once they're in.
